Comment on Education is dying, and I am letting it die. by Anand https://palash.com/2015/07/30/education-is-dying-and-i-am-letting-it-die/#comment-77 Thu, 17 Sep 2015 12:50:06 +0000 https://criticalinsider.wordpress.com/?p=107#comment-77 This topic is interesting since I have been pondering over it for a while now. Here are my thoughts on the last para (#1-#3):

#1. Yes, you can find an alternative school in India. They are too few and may not be where you need them.

#2. This is a moot point. Arguing with school authorities is a waste of time. Better focus your energies elsewhere (#3- if you can).

At least one school (Greenwood International School, Bangalore) we visited recently, proudly told us, “We believe in discipline! We will leave you shouting at the gate if you visit us without appointment. And if the kid has long hair, his head will be shaved after 3-warning.”

We came out of the school gate laughing. The fifth grader, who attended the same meeting, said, “My jaw fell to the ground, when I heard this. Papa, you will save money on the barber.”

At least 7-8-schools we visited since, we had good entertainment for sure!

#3. Well, you have to look at the practicality of your situation. Not that there is much choice (either way).

Comment on The Cult of Exams by Anand https://palash.com/2015/09/03/the-cult-of-exams/#comment-78 Thu, 17 Sep 2015 12:36:16 +0000 https://criticalinsider.wordpress.com/?p=113#comment-78 My son is in grade 5 and going through the exam process for the first time in Bangalore. He described it to a primary school teacher in US (with whom he interacted, while there), as follows (parts edited):

…so my exam had started 10th september… so far the subjects i finished are social studies art and english litrature my next subject is science.

my next complete exam is on feb.

So i have been getting a few study leave’s to study but in a study leave i stay home and ashwin (my brother) goes to school and when i actually do go to school i get a half day but my mother picks me up so i am at home by 11:00 o’clock (usually).

Right know I have a gmail account, and Youtube.

Not much is going on for me so basically i just sit at home and do something or the other and at school i finish exam and sit there waiting for my mother to pick me up…

i actually think i will do very well in exam except for in these two subjects art and 2nd language is hindi. well thats a brief story about me but a true story. I don’t think it even is a story.

Comment on A lesson on how to lose a heritage – Alwar City Palace by Chandra https://palash.com/2015/03/04/a-lesson-on-how-to-lose-a-heritage-alwar-city-palace/#comment-76 Wed, 04 Mar 2015 12:30:05 +0000 https://criticalinsider.wordpress.com/?p=103#comment-76 A sad state of affairs indeed. I assume there is a well defined policy on management of heritage sites. Alwar City Palace might not be on the list of the world heritage sites, but I’m sure there would be something differentiating it from a regular commercial building. Would RTI be a way to go?

Brought back my own memories of the days I was in Delhi. That’s one thing I miss the most about Delhi – watching live performances, be it theatre or musical performace.
Waiting for your next post on the series…

Comment on Is Haider (the movie) a test of nationalism? by Chandra https://palash.com/2014/11/03/is-haider-the-movie-a-test-of-nationalism/#comment-74 Mon, 03 Nov 2014 05:59:21 +0000 http://criticalinsider.wordpress.com/?p=70#comment-74 Introduction to Poetry

–Billy Collins

I ask them to take a poem
and hold it up to the light
like a color slide

or press an ear against its hive.

I say drop a mouse into a poem
and watch him probe his way out,

or walk inside the poem’s room
and feel the walls for a light switch.

I want them to waterski
across the surface of a poem
waving at the author’s name on the shore.

But all they want to do
is tie the poem to a chair with rope
and torture a confession out of it.

They begin beating it with a hose
to find out what it really means.

Comment on Martyrs of Unfinished Urbanization, or just collateral damages? by Chandra https://palash.com/2014/04/22/martyrs-of-unfinished-urbanization-or-just-collateral-damages/#comment-72 Tue, 22 Apr 2014 10:00:05 +0000 http://criticalinsider.wordpress.com/?p=51#comment-72 Tragic indeed. Though the most effective action would need to be top-down, I think the RWAs (read us – the desensitized) have a role to play by showing that we care to act on what upsets us, for instance, how safely or rashly a bus driver drives around.

Comment on Martyrs of Unfinished Urbanization, or just collateral damages? by Purnima Kapoor https://palash.com/2014/04/22/martyrs-of-unfinished-urbanization-or-just-collateral-damages/#comment-71 Tue, 22 Apr 2014 07:08:09 +0000 http://criticalinsider.wordpress.com/?p=51#comment-71 Its the callous attitude of the authorities. No action so far has been taken. The driver of the bus is out on bail.
